Paprika 4 subscriptions: what changes and your options

A new pricing model is a good moment to look at what you need from a recipe app. Here is what Paprika has confirmed, what stays included and how to try CookBook with your own recipes.

Is Paprika becoming a subscription app?

Paprika has confirmed that new Paprika 4 features will require a subscription after beta. Existing users can keep their current features without subscribing. If the announcement has you considering a different recipe app, CookBook is worth trying for social imports, scanning, mobile and web access, and recipe-aware help. Choose it for what you want to cook and save next.

Checked on 18 September 2026 against Paprika’s official subscription announcement. This guide explains the change, helps you compare your options and shows where to start if you want to move your recipes.

What Paprika has actually confirmed

In its FAQ updated on 14 July 2026, Paprika says new version 4 features will be paid once the app leaves beta. One subscription will cover its platforms. It has not announced a final price; an annual fee and a discount for existing users are described as likely.

“For existing users, the subscription will be fully optional.”

Paprika Support, official subscription FAQ

For existing owners, version 4 is an in-place free upgrade. Paprika says existing features, cloud backup and sync, operating-system support and maintenance will continue without an additional fee. Its Help Center still describes a Paprika 4 beta at this check.

That is a reason to compare your next app thoughtfully, not a reason to rush an export because your collection is about to disappear.

Stay, subscribe or switch: which makes sense?

Your priorityA sensible next step
Keep the workflow you already likeKeep using the features you own. If Paprika handles your saving, planning and cooking well, an optional subscription announcement alone does not mean you need another app.
Explore Paprika’s new premium featuresReview the version 4 features and final price when available. Compare the features you will actually use, rather than assuming every new tool is essential.
Save more than website recipesTry CookBook with a social recipe, a written family favourite and a recipe you already cook. See whether one editable collection on mobile and web fits your routine better.
Move an established collectionExport a backup first, then follow CookBook’s supported transfer route. A recipe archive is different from a complete copy of pantry, calendar and shopping data.

Household sharing deserves its own check. Paprika’s version 4 family-sharing guide describes premium subaccounts with separate credentials and shared household data. CookBook’s current household approach uses one account across devices, rather than linked individual profiles. If separate household logins are your priority, include that difference in your decision.

What makes CookBook a compelling Paprika alternative?

CookBook brings the recipes you find into the routine you already have: save something appealing, adapt it, plan a meal, shop and cook. Its strongest case is a collection that comes from several places, rather than a promise that every cook needs to abandon Paprika.

  • Bring social saves into your recipe collection. Import supported TikTok, Instagram and Facebook recipes alongside website recipes. Keep ingredients and instructions together instead of hunting through saved posts.
  • Keep written favourites useful. Scan a recipe photo or family card into editable text, then check the result before cooking.
  • Use your phone and a full web app. Organise on a larger screen, then take the same collection into the kitchen.
  • Get help with the recipe you have saved. Ask CookBook about the recipe, explore variations with AI Chef and use estimated nutrition with Pro. Review suggestions to suit your ingredients and needs.

CookBook has a Pro subscription too

Start free with up to 20 saved recipes, 20 smart imports and 2 shopping lists. CookBook Pro offers monthly and yearly plans, with a 14-day trial on the yearly plan. Team-assisted transfer of a Paprika archive requires Pro.

Use the CookBook pricing page to understand the plans, then check the price and offer shown in your app. Prices can vary by country, region and app store. Moving to CookBook should be a decision about the tools you will use, not an assumption that it removes every subscription.

What are Paprika users discussing?

The public conversations cover more than frustration with another subscription. Readers ask what remains included, which new features justify paying, and how to keep their recipes if they change apps. Replies include both subscription fatigue and support for retaining existing functionality while charging for additions.

You can read the July subscription FAQ discussion and a separate Paprika 4 and CookBook discussion. Those are individual experiences and questions; the official announcement above is the source for Paprika’s policy.

Considering a move? Start with your favourites

  1. Try your next routine. Get CookBook, save a few familiar recipes and plan one dinner before committing to a library move.
  2. Keep a portable copy. Follow how to export Paprika recipes. Keep the original export somewhere safe.
  3. Use the supported transfer. Follow how to transfer Paprika recipes to CookBook. The guide explains accepted formats, Pro import assistance and what to check afterwards.

Your first success can be a meal, not a perfectly reorganised archive. Keep the recipes you love, choose a useful tag and cook something from your new collection.

Frequently asked questions

Will existing Paprika users have to subscribe?

No. Existing users keep their current features without subscribing. A subscription adds new Paprika 4 features after beta.

How much will Paprika 4 cost?

Pricing was unconfirmed at our 18 September 2026 check. Paprika described annual billing and an existing-user discount as likely.

Can I export my recipes before switching from Paprika?

Yes. Paprika supports HTML export and its .paprikarecipes format. CookBook’s team accepts an HTML ZIP including images, which it prefers, or a .paprikarecipes export for Pro-assisted transfer. Keep your original backup and check the transferred recipes before removing anything.

Is CookBook a subscription-free alternative?

CookBook has a free allowance of 20 saved recipes, 20 smart imports and 2 shopping lists, plus paid CookBook Pro subscriptions. It is an alternative for social saving, scanning, mobile and web use, planning and cooking, rather than a promise to avoid paid plans.
